Steamed Fish with Crackers and Okra

Steamed fish with crackers and okra is a favourite traditional Caribbean dish. It can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner with any starch of your choice.

Fish is very high in protein which is needed for the growth and repair of our body tissues. It also contain minerals and vitamins. Okra is also another nutritious food which provides the body with vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, riboflavin and thiamine. With your starch added it provides your meal with carbohydrate which provides energy for the body.

So below we have provided this easy recipe for a great combination of fish, crackers and okras which will add value to your diet.

STEAM FISH (with water crackers and okras)


3 medium sized whole fish
1 dozen crackers
6 medium okras each cut in half
½ cup coconut milk
1 small carrot cut very thin
2 cloves garlic chopped
1 large onion cut in rings
2 stalks escallion
2 tbsp butter
3 sprigs thyme
6 grains pimento berry
salt and pepper to taste


Step 1: Clean and wash fish in water with lime juice or vinegar added. Then drain.

Step 2: Add coconut milk to large skillet and bring to a boil.

Step 3: Add carrots and okras and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Place fish into the boiling coconut milk along with butter, garlic, onion, escallion, thyme, pimento berry, salt and pepper.

Step 5: Allow to steam for 10 minutes then add crackers.

Step 6: Allow to steam another 5 minutes after crackers are added.

Step 7: Serve. Best served hot.
